Seasonal Allergies

Seasonal allergies are caused by an overreaction of the immune system to airborne allergens such as pollen and mold during the spring, summer, and fall. Seasonal allergies are disruptive, causing constant sneezing, nasal congestion, a runny nose, itchy eyes, and a sore throat. Southwest Asthma & Allergy Associates can help you manage these symptoms during allergy season.

Diagnostic Approach for Seasonal Allergies

Getting to the root of your symptoms starts with a proper allergy evaluation. Sometimes what feels like a routine case of seasonal allergies could actually be something that deserves attention. Our process is simple, and physicians follow a sequential evaluation approach:

Symptom Review and Medical History

The process begins with a review of symptom timing, recurrence patterns, outdoor exposures, home environment, and family history of allergies. It helps us identify possible seasonal triggers.

Respiratory Evaluation

For patients experiencing chest tightness and breathing difficulties, a respiratory examination clarifies the issue. Seasonal allergies aren’t always confined to runny noses and coughs because they can cause airway irritation, too.

Prick Test

The prick test determines your allergies rapidly. A tiny amount of allergens is applied to your skin and lightly pricked using a lancet. This allows us to determine your sensitivity to the allergen.

Intradermal Skin Test

An intradermal skin test may be used when further diagnostic confirmation is required. A small amount of allergen is injected under your skin to assess sensitivity.

Blood Test

The blood test is performed when skin testing is not possible. This involves measuring IgE antibodies in the blood and checking for reactions to pollen, mold, and other airborne allergens.
